하드 록의 전설 Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page, Robert Plant 등의 화려한 라인업에 포크와 락, world music 그리고 신화적이고 신비적인 요소를 사운드에 도입한 전설적인 하드 락/메탈 밴드. 70년대를 풍미했던 Led Zeppelin의 인기와 영향력은 그들로 인해 세워진 각종 진기록에서 확인될 수 있다. 언론의 접촉을 극히 자제 했던 그들의 접촉창구는 단지 콘서트와 앨범으로만 개방되어졌으며 결과 Led Zeppelin은 자신들의 음악만큼이나 신비스러운 존재로 기억 되고 있다. 팝 지향적 요소를 배제하고 일관된 전형적인 락의 concept 앨범만을 발표, off-stage 매너와 음악성에 수준 높은 차별성을 과시하기도 하였다. 68년 영국에서 결성된 Led Zeppelin은 Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck이 거쳐간 Yardbirds의 후속으로 결성된 팀인만큼 이미 출범 전에 성공의 가능성을 내재하고 있었다. Keith Relf, James McCarty가 탈퇴함에 따라 Yardbirds의 모든 권리와 의무를 떠맡게 된 세기의 기타리스트 Jimmy Page는 베이시스트 Chris Dreja와 함께 팀의 재건을 시도한다. Hobbstweedle 이라는 밴드의 보컬 Robert Plant를 소개받은 Jimmy Page는 Plant와 그의 옛 밴드 메이트인 드러머 John Bonham를 새롭게 영입하고 Chris Dreja 마저 떠난 베이스의 자리에 John Paul Jones를 영입하여 New Yardbirds를 출범시킨다. 69년 Yardbirds 시절의 공연 계약의 의무를 모두 이행한 New Yardbirds는 그룹의 명칭을 Led Zeppelin으로 개칭하고 30시간이라는 단기간에 녹음을 마치게 되는 데뷔앨범 'Led Zeppelin'을 발표한다. 이미 발매 이전 프로모션 투어의 지원을 받은 앨범은 단기간에 US 앨범차트 Top10에 진입하는 쾌거를 이루게 되고 이윽고 발표하는 두 번째 앨범 'Led ZeppelinⅡ'는 앨범 차트 No.1의 자리를 7주간 고수한다. 70년 British folk 성향의 'Led ZeppelinⅢ'에 이르러 Led Zeppelin 음악은 더욱 성숙해지고 깊이를 더해갔으며 71년 그들의 최고 걸작이라 일컬어지는 네 번째 앨범 'Led ZeppelinⅣ'을 발표한다. 락의 전형인 "Black Dog"과 포크의 전형인 "The Battle of Evermore"와 두 장르를 잇는 다리역할의 "Stairway to Heaven" (락음악 역사상 라디오에서 가장 많이 방송된) 등이 수록된 'Led ZeppelinⅣ'는 이후 25년간 천 6백만장의 앨범 판매량을 기록하기도 한다. 73년 "Houses of the Holy"에서 그들의 트레이드 마크인 포크와 락 외에 레게와 펑크를 다루는 실험적인 시도를 하였고 앨범은 발매 즉시 동시에 영국과 미국차트를 평정한다. 그 해 미국에서 개최된 콘서트로 Led Zeppelin은 Beatles의 Box-office 기록을 단숨에 경신 한다. 76년 뉴욕 매디슨 스퀘어가든의 실황공연(1974년)을 담은 레드 제플린 최초의 공식 라이브 앨범인 'Song Remains the Same (live)'이 발매되고 여섯 째 앨범 'Presence'는 다시 한번 발표 즉시 No.1에 올라 Led Zeppelin은 견고한 아성을 지켜나가지만 77년 Robert Plant의 교통사고 이후 서서히 쇠퇴하는 양상을 보이기 시작한다. Plant의 불행은 다음 해에도 이어져 6살난 아들의 사망으로 충격을 받은 Plant의 은둔으로 Led Zeppelin은 이후 1년 반 동안 해체의 루머 속에 활동을 중단한다. Led Zeppelin은 79년 유럽 투어로 활동을 재개하지만 Kneworth의 공연은 결국 그들의 마지막 유럽 공연이 된다. 1980년 미국 투어의 리허설 기간 중 드러머 John Bonham이 과음에 의한 질식사로 사망하는 사고가 발생하자 John Bonham이 없는 Led Zeppelin은 진정한 Led Zeppelin이 될 수 없다며 밴드의 해체를 결정한다. Led Zeppelin의 해체 이후 John Paul Jones는 프로듀서로 전향하였으며 post-Led Zeppelin 시기에도 성공적인 캐리어를 쌓게 되는 Jimmy Page와 Robert Plant는 1994년 재회 'Unledded'를 발표하기도 한다.           (출처 : http://www.mnet.com)

Immigrant Song

지독히 우울한 날엔 한껏 볼륨을 높여 이 曲을 듣는다.   빠르고 격정적인 타악기의 자극, 강렬한 베이스음의 울림, 세계 3대 vocalist 중의 하나라는  Robert Plant의 목소리가   혼란스럽고 고통스런 심장을 뒤흔들어 헹구어 놓는 듯한 느낌 때문이다.
